Permanent magnetism has been known since ancient times. When submitted to a magnetic field some materials retain this magnetism.
They are called Permanent Magnets.
The principle of electromagnetism was discovered in 1819 by means of a compass. In fact, when a copper wire is wound around an iron core and fed an electric current, it induces an electromagnetic field. The magnetism of the iron core and the poles of the magnetic circuit can attract a ferromagnetic material.
